Latest tourism figures indicate the region has welcomed more than 400,000 visitors in the last year.
The state's tourism minister Tim Holding welcomed the news: "It's a huge result and it shows that the strategy we've put in place for major events, the sporting and cultural events, that strategy is working really, really well."
Mr Holding noted that the region had overcome a number of challenges in recent months including the swine flu pandemic and devastating bush fires.
"And really what these figures show is the way in which the community has rallied to support those who were affected," he added.
According to Visit Victoria, the area has much to offer backpackers, including the chance to explore aboriginal culture along the Great Ocean Road and trekking through the region's seven national parks.
