New research from the Australian National University warns that the iconic landmark, at 3.5 metres above sea level, is at risk from high tides caused by climate change.
The study forecasts that the building's supporting structure could be damaged by rising saltwater while changes in humidity and raised temperatures could have an effect on its external fabric.
Other world heritage sites could also be at risk including the country's Royal Exhibition Centre and Carlton Gardens, according to the report.
Commenting on the researchers' findings, Australia's environment minister Peter Garret, said: "The disintegration of our World Heritage areas would be an irreparable loss."
"We must act now," he added.
Meanwhile, the BBC reports that some of the building's interior is in a state of "dilapidation".
According to the news provider, supporters of the opera house are currently calling for funding for a complete refurbishment.
