Lake Eyre in South Australia could prove a pull for backpackers, many of whom could have bought
cheap travel insurance.
Watoday.com.au reports that the region has seen a surge in tourism figures in recent weeks as water at unseasonably high levels in the lake have brought in a range of wildlife, which visitors are keen to view.
The water levels have been sustained by heavy rainfall in Queensland in recent months, which is still filtering down to the lake, although the water will soon evaporate.
Increased numbers of tourists, many of whom may have bought
worldwide travel insurance, have led to a higher demand for scenic flights over the region and local pilot Trevor Wright has had to call for qualified personnel from all over Australia in order to avoid disappointing visitors.
Water levels are expected to peak sometime over the Australian winter, which starts imminently, although business could stay at the current levels for another eight or nine weeks.
The Lake Eyre Basin spans nearly 1.2 million sq km in South Australia.
