A new advert by acclaimed film director Baz Luhrmann is expected to boost traveller numbers to Australian.
The ad is also expected to cash in on the appeal of soon-to-be released movie Australia, a World War II saga also directed by Luhrmann and starring Nicole Kidman and Hugo Jackman.
Kidman stars as an English aristocrat who inherits a huge ranch called Faraway Downs just before the outbreak of war. Overcoming initial indifference, she gradually falls under the outback's spell just as rival cattle barons are eyeing up her property.
To cut a long story short, she and a taciturn drover (Jackman) embark on a journey to drive 2,000 head of cattle hundreds of miles across country to Darwin, escaping the cattle barons but running into some Japanese fighter planes.
Insiders say the film is a stunning showcase for the Australian landcape and to drive the point home Oz tourism chiefs have hired the movie's director to direct a £22 million series of adverts which will appear in the UK in October, a month prior to Australia's cinema release.
