Travellers are advised to buy
worldwide travel insurance for trips to Cairns, Australia, despite the presence of a new honorary British consul.
Cairns.com.au reports that John McIntyre has been appointed as the new honorary British consul in Cairns in north-east Australia. Mr McIntyre, who is also the director of destination development with Tourism Tropical North Queensland, is the person that British nationals can call first if they get into difficulties in the region.
Mr McIntyre told the website: "If someone gets into trouble in remote areas, it is more than likely I will know someone locally who can provide information and assistance."
Although the new consul does not deal with issues arising from passports or visas, anything else is firmly in his ballpark and he believes it is important for people having problems to be able to talk to someone in the know who is also British.
One-way travel insurance is one of the policies recommended to backpackers heading out to Australia.
