Cheap travel insurance is urged for backpackers heading to Sydney, which has been voted the top city in the world at the Conde Nast Traveller Awards.
The accolade was awarded in New York and was the 13th time that the monthly magazine - boasting 770,000 subscribers in the United States - has given the prize to Sydney. The Australian city was praised for its friendly nature, cleanliness and character, while its excellent cuisine was also noted.
Jodi McKay, minister for tourism, said: "The beauty of our natural environment, the eclectic nightlife and gourmet restaurants are part of what makes Sydney so appealing to international visitors."
Nearly 300,000 American tourists have visited Australia over the course of the last 12 months, and have collectively spent nearly $530 million.
Sydney remains a hugely popular destination for backpackers from all over the world, and the government has launched a new promotional campaign prompted by the imminent release of Baz Luhrmann's epic film Australia.
