People facing an anti-litter campaign when visiting Fraser Island in Australia have the option of buying
cheap travel insurance before they leave home.
The Fraser Coast Chronicle reports that the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is launching a campaign to reduce the amount of litter left by backpackers and other travellers who visit.
Local authorities are suggesting alternative plans to tackle the problem, such as introducing tag-along tours staffed by people aware of the environmental issues surrounding the island, in addition to providing more education.
Barb Hovard, a Fraser Coast councillor, told the paper: "It's about letting people know before they go over that it's a special island and they need to treat it in a special way."
The intention is to encourage backpackers, many of whom may have bought
worldwide travel insurance, to treat the environment with more thought and to leave Fraser Island's beaches in a clean state when they head home.
Fraser Island is a World Heritage site, as is the world-famous Great Barrier Reef.
