People taking advantage of proposed free flights to Australia could benefit from
cheap travel insurance.
The Age reports that tourists may be flown in to the country free of charge under a proposed scheme dubbed the Mayday Project, as long as they agree to spend around $5,000 (£2,341.24) when they get there.
Airfares would be paid for by the government, which believes that the idea is novel enough to grab the attention of prospective travellers and help revitalise the Australian economy during the current global downturn.
Glenn Millen, innovation director at Independent Tourism Holdings, came up with the plan and told the website: "We can try and hold the numbers that we were at and that would be a really good scenario or, if there is a Santa Claus we might increase the numbers against the trend."
