Iconic Greyhound buses are a staple for
gap year travel insurance customers and their fellow backpackers, but their value has been highlighted by a new award.
Tourists and young travellers from around the world have named Greyhound Australia as the country's best transport company at the annual Golden Backpack awards.
More than 450 tourist industry leaders attended the prize-giving ceremony hosted by travel magazine TNT.
Organisers of the event say the awards aim to recognise those companies who help to give travellers a memorable Australian experience.
The bus business' chief executive Rob Thomas said the award proves "what backpackers want is to be able to immerse themselves in the local culture".
He pointed to the launch of new product range Greyhound Adventures as evidence of how the company supports local tourism operators while providing adventure seekers with an authentic experience.
Trips offered in the new programme include journeys along the Queensland coast, visits to the bush stations and pubs of the outback and a tour of the coast of Western Australia.
