Conducted by researchers from the University of Otago, the study found that areas where tourism is the primary industry are likely to have higher instances of cheating, reports the Cairns Post.
The paper's lead author Dr Linda Malam told the newspaper popular tourism destinations, such as Cairns, had become "sexually transgressive" zones where holiday trysts are the norm for backpackers.
Perhaps due to the fact these encounters could be kept more easily from friends and family, couples living in such areas are more likely to stray, indicated the study.
"Many people see their backpacking experience as a real hiatus from ordinary life," added Dr Malam.
She noted that men working in the Aussie diving industry were the most likely to cheat as they "have high desirability in that sexual economy".
