Although Queensland, Australia, is already a highly popular destination among
backpacker travel insurance customers local tourism chiefs have promised further investment in the region's natural wonders.
Plans for developing the city of Rockhampton into a major sporting hub, creating an eco-friendly safari park around Agnes Water and a host of new travellers' attractions are in the pipeline, according to tourism minister Peter Lawlor.
Commenting on the proposals, Mr Lawlor said: "Around 300 backpackers pass through the region each day heading either north or south and the aim is to get them to hop off their bus or out of their car and stay for a while."
"The region already has fantastic attractions such as the Great Barrier Reef, islands and national parks to attract backpackers, but it is lacking in high-quality backpacker accommodation, tours and activities to encourage them to stay longer in the region," he added.
Attractions already in place in the region include the magnificent limestone Capricorn Caves and the Mount Archer National Park, providing spectacular views of the city below, says Rockhamptoninfo.com.
