The Gold Coast, in Queensland in Australia, has attracted 130,000 visitors in the past year, which is a year-on-year increase of over ten per cent, reports abc.net.au.
The figures, from the Gold Coast Tourism Corporation, show that the region remains hugely popular and that the global credit crunch does not seem to be putting people off their travel plans. Australia is renowned as a destination for both backpackers travelling on a budget and tourists looking for a more sophisticated experience.
That said, the line between the two can sometimes become blurred, with so-called 'flash-packers' opting to travel on the cheap to save money. Ben Pole, of the Gold Coast Tourism Corporation, told the website: "These are people who have got the money but are choosing to spend it on efficient travel and putting the dollars that they spend into adventure travel experiences."
British travellers are one of the biggest groups to visit the area, encouraged in part by the sense of adventure that surrounds the region, and a desire to experience such an incredible natural landscape.
