UK still the biggest backpacking market in Australia

A new report from Tourism Australia has shown that British travelers make up 21 per cent of the international backpacker market in Australia, making it the country's biggest backpacking market.

Europe is the continent which contributes the most backpackers to Australia, Germany accounted nine per cent of the market.

The US has the same number, compared to Japan and Korea's six per cent share.

An increasingly large number of New Zealand residents are backpacking their way to Oz from the land of the long white cloud.

Since 2000, the number of backpackers in Australia from the home of the Maoris has increased by 11 per cent every year, Korea has experienced the same rate of growth.

The survey also noted the rise of the backpacking business person, with more travellers using their backpack as a substitute briefcase.

Since 2001, 20 per cent more backpackers have journeyed to Australia for purposes of employment and 12 per cent for reasons of business.
