The Noosa Journal reports that Noosa in Queensland has seen growing instances of so-called 'surf rage', where surfers clash in the water for a variety of reasons, with the incidents prompting local authorities to address the problem to avoid bringing the local surf culture into disrepute.
Signs are to be trialled in the town, while a leafleting campaign has been designed to more effectively publicise areas designated for beginners.
Ross Sanderson, place design manager for the Sunshine Coast regional council, told the paper: "It's not rocket science, but it does take a co-operative effort to ensure that everyone who surfs at our beaches - from experienced locals to backpackers having their first try - understands and contributes to the maintenance of safe, enjoyable surfing."
Backpackers trying surfing for the first time could consider buying
gap year travel insurance and ensuring they are specifically covered for surfing.
Queensland is recognised as having some of best surf beaches in Australia and also offers the Great Barrier Reef.
