Holidaying construction workers in Oz could get two-year visa

The Australian government has announced new legislation allowing working visa holders in the construction industry to stay in the country for an additional 12 months.

Under present rules, a working visa entitles anyone between the ages of 18 and 30 to spend a year working and living in Australia.

But now builders and construction workers will be able to add a second year to that if they have worked for a primary producer in regional Australia for the first three months of their initial visa.

Senator Chris Evans said: "This measure will further boost the number of people coming to Australia on working holiday visas to work, play and spend money.

"We are seeing a record backpacker programme this year, which is great for businesses, especially in regional Australia, and good news for Australia's tourism industries."

The latest development follows the recent announcement that workers in any industry can extend their visas by a year if they work for the first three months.

The added incentive awarded to the construction industry can be explained by the fact that it is very popular with backpackers looking to find a physical job while on their travels.

Tom Blackett, spokesman for the Australian Visa Bureau, added: "Now is a great time for British working holidaymakers to take an online Australian visa application and see if they could qualify for up to two years Down Under."ADNFCR-1708-ID-18669072-ADNFCR
