New research has shown that Aussies and Kiwis are still lapping up the backpacking lifestyle but are now developing a green conscience in relation to travelling.
A study commissioned by Contiki Holidays quizzed a number of 18 to 34-year-olds in Australia and found that international travel is still their top priority, ahead of domestic travel, property and car ownership.
But with concerns about the environment now at the forefront of many travellers' minds, 54 per cent of those surveyed said they would ideally like their travel to be carbon-neutral.
Tony Laskey, general manager of Contiki Holidays in New Zealand, has explained that young Kiwis are increasingly sharing those views.
He told the New Zealand Herald: "Ten years ago, most young New Zealanders never gave much consideration to the carbon footprint of their travel.
"Today, sustainability concerns can outweigh price when making a purchasing decision. This is why in the past 24 months Contiki New Zealand has seen growth in both outbound and inbound clients as more young people see coach touring as not only a fun, but also an environmentally-friendly way to explore the world."
In addition, the poll showed that 87 per cent believed supporting the local economies of places they visit is important, while 84 per cent highlighted the significance of using local resources sparingly.
