Backpackers and gappers travelling in Australia with a thirst for adventure now have the opportunity to go face-to-face with crocodiles as part of a new tourist attraction.
Crocosaurus Cove, which opened in Darwin at the end of last week, gives gutsy visitors the chance to get up close and personal with Chopper, the centre's resident crocodile.
Housed in the so-called 'Cage of Death' crocodile tank, the reptile is only separated from swimmers by a 4cm acrylic receptacle which is in the shape of a tube.
Jim Charles, a reporter from the Northern Territory News, gave the new experience a test-run and explained that it generates a mixture of awe and trepidation.
He said: "It was pretty amazing - a good adrenaline rush. You just feel the power when it hits the cage. You wouldn't have a chance."
The centre is home to a total of 100 crocodiles and around 40 turtles, while also containing a host of other lizards and fish in water tanks.
While visitors to the Crocosaurus Cove are well-protected, it goes without saying that anyone taking on diving excursions while travelling should ensure they have a comprehensive travel insurance policy.
