The death of a Danish backpacker while mountaineering in Tasmania has highlighted mountaineering safety precautions and may result in more purchases of
online travel insurance.
AAP reports that Kasper Sorensen died from his injuries after falling from a peak in mid-2007 while climbing Cradle Mountain.
As a combined result of failing to register his intentions and the subsequent poor weather conditions, it was 30 days before his body was found by rescuers.
Coronor Peter Wilson this week told the news agency why a search was not initiated after another climber reported a line backpack sitting near the peak: "No further action was taken at this stage by the park's staff as it was quite common for backpacks to be left unattended for many hours whilst walkers explored the area."
The incident reinforces the importance of making sure authorities know where backpackers are going and when they plan to be back, so that measures can be taken to help.
More people could be encouraged to buy
worldwide travel insurance as a result.
