The Daily Mercury reports that the Mackay regional council has approved a preliminary application to turn a 36-hectare site into a water park in a bid to tackle the problem of flooding, which often happens in the area when there is heavy rainfall.
A backpacker hostel would be among the developments to be built nearby and the park itself would comprise two lakes offering cable skiing facilities, where water-skiers are pulled across the water by a cable device and have the option of jumping ramps and obstacles along the way.
Councillor Dave Perkins told the paper: "In terms of capturing water, it will be great for the area. For the council, it's a good outcome for land that you would have to be very careful with."
He added that the development could be crucial in attracting more visitors to the town, many of whom may have purchased
