Backpacker travel insurance should be integral to the plans of anyone travelling to Venice, renowned for its stunning architecture and canal system.
Ansa.it reports that the winter months will witness a campaign to clean up the city and improve manners in everyday life. The scheme, which will be publicised using banners and posters, is the brainchild of Augusto Salvadori, the city's Public Decorum councillor who has already managed to drive pigeons from various Venetian landmarks in a bid to prevent damage to their distinctive architecture.
Renata Codello, Venice artistic superintendent, told the website: "Just a few months after the feed ban most of [St Mark's] square is free of the animals who have moved off to find food on the islands."
The distribution of 66,000 'pooper scoopers' for dogs is another facet of the plan which is intended to improve both the city's international image and the quality of life for residents.
Backpackers visiting the city will need to remember to have their luggage in their hands before they board waterbuses.
