The Border Watch reports that over 30 workers were sometimes onsite on any given day throughout December to help collect the harvest at Australia Aitken's Ranch Fresh Cherries. The workforce picked 12 tonnes of cherries from 5,000 trees with a 40 per cent increase in volume, although part of the crop was lost when mid-December rain flooded part of the orchard.
Greg Aitken, the orchard manager, told the website: "We still use people to pull out split, damaged and stemless fruit by hand, so it's an expensive process, but one of those things you can't do any other way at this stage."
Mr Aitken added that backpackers seeking to earn extra cash to fund their trip were a vital addition to the orchard's core picking teams.
