Backpacker website connects people offering travellers the couch

A new website has been established to connect people who are happy to provide free accommodation to backpackers and travellers.

Couchsurfing.com already has an online community in excess of 670,000 spread across 231 countries. The site is designed for travellers on a tight budget who are looking to save money wherever possible, and offers contact with members who are willing to offer their couch for the night free of charge.

Dan Hoffer, one of four original founders of the website, told nationalpost.com: "Couch surfing is a global hospitality network and the premise is that a traveller can stay anywhere in the world, for free, in someone's home, as long as they are willing to sleep on the couch."

The site is attracting half a million new members every six weeks. While many backpackers are keen to get a night for free in their destination city, hospitable citizens are just as keen to show their temporary lodgers a night on the town.

Travellers are advised to seek backpacker travel insurance as part of their travel planning.
