An expert at popular travel guide Lonely Planet has urged backpackers to monitor their spending carefully while travelling.
Backpackers planning to be travelling for a prolonged period of time should form a daily spending plan so as to avoid being caught out by a sudden lack of funds. With young people increasingly spending months saving up for a trip before setting off, it's especially important to make sure that hard-earned cash is spread out and made to last.
Tom Hall, a travel editor at Lonely Plant, told loan-arrangers.co.uk: "One of the old adages of going on a big trip is: 'The more money that you have, the better time that you'll have.'"
Mr Hall points out that spending only a little extra each day can have serious repercussions further down the line, even if the consequences don't kick in until a traveller gets back home. Going over-budget by £5 each day will result in a £450 over-spend during a three-month period.
