Backpackers planning to seek crop-picking work while visiting New Zealand have the option of buying
worldwide travel insurance.
Tvnz.co.nz reports that many orchardists in New Zealand's Hawkes Bay face the loss of part of their crop due to the lack of available pickers.
Fewer backpackers are around seeking the seasonal work as the global downturn has resulted in fewer numbers and a narrower than usual harvesting season has put extra pressure on orchards to arrange picking within a tighter timeframe.
Jerf van Beek, the national labour coordinator, said that the start of the kiwifruit season further north is also a factor and told the website: "We could never plan for that and therefore we could see that with the Bay of Plenty starting their kiwifruit harvest, people were moving to the Bay of Plenty from Hawke's Bay."
Around 7,000 Pacific workers will be available to help, but the backpacker market is also crucial to make sure the harvest is fully collected.
People could seek
backpacker travel insurance when they head to New Zealand.
Seasonal work is often a popular pursuit for backpackers as the money can be used to fund further travelling either through New Zealand or other parts of the world.
