Backpackers could purchase
worldwide travel insurance while taking steps to avoid malaria in far-flung holiday destinations.
Britons travelling to countries around the world that have a heightened risk of malaria should take a few basic precautions to reduce the risk of contracting the disease, according to Malaria Awareness.
Jo Yirrell, ambassador for the organisation, said that travellers should always seek out anti-malarial drugs before leaving home and ensure they finish the complete course, even if they are back in the UK before they have taken all the pills.
In addition, she said that backpackers should make sure their bodies are not overly exposed, so as to minimise the risk of mosquito bites and that mosquito nets and Deet spray should be used.
Ms Yirrell said: "If you just take those three precautions and make sure you complete your course of anti-malarials, you are probably going to be absolutely fine."
People have the option of seeking
cheap travel insurance as they prepare for a long-haul trip.
According to Malaria Awareness, around nine people die in the UK each year from malaria.
