Backpackers looking to take advantage of great flight deals have the option of buying
gap year travel insurance before they leave home.
According to Webjet, air passengers, many of whom may have bought
online travel insurance, are enjoying access to the lowest air fares in ten years, with a 40 per cent reduction in the cost of international flights so far this year and a 20 per cent decline in domestic prices.
The global downturn has prompted many travellers to seek out the cheapest options and the result has been reduced demand for first-class and business-class seats, while industry competition has also been a factor.
David Clarke, managing director of Webjet, said: "Where we've most noticed the change is the premium long-haul; the top end of the market. The adventure market has been quite strong all year - those guys who are the backpackers and are not concerned about mortgages or job security."
He added that major discounts have recently been launched on domestic flights in the US and there has been a strong response.
More people are choosing to travel by train rather than by plane in order to save money, according to Rail Europe.
