Backpackers looking for cheap tourist deals in the Australian town of Bundaberg could also buy
cheap travel insurance.
News Mail reports that the falling value of the pound against the Australian dollar has been affecting British backpackers who were already on a budget, with many having to keep a close eye on the exchange rate. All visitors have the option of buying
backpacker travel insurance.
Bundaberg has responded to the issue by spending $50,000 (£22,811.10) improving the Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism (BNBT) website with details of local offers and money-saving travel packages for backpackers to take advantage of.
Greg Barnes, head of BNBT, told the website: "We are worried about the impact of the economic situation on the region. But we have already put measures in place to combat it."
Around 37,000 people - mostly from Europe - visited the Bundaberg region during 2008 and the special offers are designed to entice a similar number this year.
Bundaberg offers access to a range of national parks in coastal Queensland as well as the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef.
