Backpackers spending more as they travel

According to popular travel guide Lonely Planet backpackers are spending more money on their travels and are no longer restricting themselves to budget experiences.

An increasing number of backpackers are building up healthy savings before they set off as they plan to spend money on getting the best experiences they can while they're overseas. Destinations such as New Zealand, Australia and South Africa are proving increasingly popular for backpackers, but as extreme sports become more common and more in demand, many travellers are saving up to make sure they can afford them.

Tom Hall, travel editor at Lonely Planet, said: "If you go all the way to New Zealand you are going to want to do that bungee jump or skydive."

Death-defying extreme sports are becoming more integral to the backpacker experience, and as a result could be bringing an end to the concept of the penniless traveller tramping through the wilderness relying on the kindness of strangers.

Backpackers should seek cheap online insurance that provides cover for specific activities.
