Hostels in New Zealand are feeling the pinch of the credit crunch, a report has confirmed after figures from Statistics New Zealand revealed a nine per cent year-on-year drop in guest nights for the month of September.
With 28,000 less nights booked during September 2008 than the same month last year backpackers heading to New Zealand may be able to grab themselves a bargain.
Typically, New Zealand is well known for its countryside so attracts backpackers hoping to take leisurely driving holidays or those interested in extreme sports such as skydiving or kayaking.
Such activities are perhaps the most expensive single activities backpackers get up to however, and so it is no surprise that New Zealand is suffering from a sharp decline in visitors.
Those hoping to get down under in order to make the most of the summer for some outdoor pursuits will need to make sure their
backpacker travel insurance covers extreme sports, as discovering a sport wasn't covered too late can be both painful and costly.
