Worldwide travel insurance could be an option for backpackers looking to defy the global downturn and head overseas this year.
New figures from online travel agency On the Beach reveal that over 30 per cent of Britons are responding to the recession by booking a shorter holiday, rather than not taking one at all.
Simon Cooper, chief executive of the agency, said that staying in cheaper hotels and reducing travel expenses are more popular options than staying at home and not spending any money.
Mr Cooper said: "Cutting out these luxuries means consumers can still escape the doom and gloom of the financial crisis and unwind in the sun."
Nearly 40 per cent of travellers surveyed by the agency said they will be staying in a cheaper hotel, while nearly half said they will be taking fewer excursions while on their trip.
In addition, almost 60 per cent will be heading on long-haul trips rather than choosing a destination in Europe. All backpackers and other tourists have the option of buying
online travel insurance.
