People planning to take advantage of the first commercial flights to Baghdad should buy
worldwide travel insurance first.
According to hostelbookers.com, AFP has reported that Swedish airliner Nordic Leisure has begun the first commercial flights to the Iraqi capital for nearly 20 years. The first service took off last week and carried 150 people, most of whom were Iraqi nationals. A flight from Hong Kong was scheduled for the weekend, while Iraqi Airways will soon commence services to Europe.
The airport formerly known as Saddam International Airport has been renamed Baghdad International Airport and is situated ten miles west of the capital.
Resumed commercial operations at the airport are the latest development in the drive to return normalcy to the country. British troops have just spent what should be their last Christmas in Iraq, while president-elect Barack Obama has also pledged to instigate a withdrawal within two years.
