Backpackers heading off on their travels with the new Lonely Planet magazine are advised to buy
online travel insurance as well.
According to mad.co.uk, backpacker travel bible Lonely Planet has been launched as a monthly magazine for the first time. The magazine release has been put together with the help of £75 million worth of investment from the BBC, with the Worldwide division of the corporation having purchased a 75 per cent stake in the company.
Stephen Palmer, Lonely Planet's global chief executive officer based in Australia, told the website: "We are a trusted travel content provider and the magazine adds to that and brings in more people, experts and knowledge. It's a community experience."
To many backpackers the Lonely Planet guide is as essential to their journey as
worldwide travel insurance, although the magazine has taken over a year to reach shops since the BBC became involved.
Online social networks and travel websites were beginning to threaten Lonely Planet's place in the market, but the December 2008 issue contains features on Greece, Kenya and Paris that grab the attention.
Gap year travel insurance is recommended for younger backpackers.
