English newspaper the Guardian has compiled a list of the top ten New York bars to visit.
Their Englishman in New York chose the Please Don't Tell Bar (PDT) in East Village as one of them. Why the name? Well, perhaps because it has a secret and rather unusual entrance - you reach it by walking through a phone booth attached to a hot dog joint.
Once inside you will be greeted by a great choice of cocktails and, er, hot dogs.
Witches' Kiss is one of the most popular cocktails and the Chang Dog is one of the most asked-for hot dogs.
Bb also makes the Guardian list. This small oak-panelled room in Tribeca has room enough for a couple of booths, a long bar and a jazz band whose ranks tend to swell as the evening progresses.
The Japanese bartenders are adept at making ice balls, which involves using a large fish-bone knife to carve a block of ice into a perfect sphere. Best enjoyed with a bourbon or whisky apparently.
Apotheke also gets an honourable mention - this former opium den is famous / notorious for serving homemade absinthes.
