The plight of two British backpackers who fell ten metres down a cliff in Darwin, Australia, a few days ago could drive more people to buy
cheap travel insurance.
Northern Territory News reports that Lynne Ford, a 26-year-old backpacker from Scotland, slipped down the Esplanade in Darwin and dislocated her shoulder in the process, while her boyfriend suffered a broken ankle when he followed to try to help.
Both backpackers received help from local emergency services and were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital.
The incident could serve as a potent reminder to backpackers of the need for
worldwide travel insurance, as medical bills can quickly rack up if visitors break bones and need treatment in an overseas hospital.
While there is always a risk of personal injury as there is anywhere in the world, insurance against theft is also an option, especially as many backpackers opt to stay in a hostel, where rooms and dormitories are often communal and leave personal possessions much more exposed.
