Backpackers could consider getting hold of
online travel insurance when they set off on a trip, rather than relying on a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
MoneyWeek reports that although having an EHIC gives holders access to reduced price treatment, it is only enough to secure the same level of medical attention that a local would get and this will not necessarily be enough.
Regular travellers could consider buying multi-trip
backpacker travel insurance policies as these often provide cheaper cover for an unlimited number of trips each year.
In addition, people could consider the level of medical cover provided in the event of an accident, as the total expenditure could rise the further away from home they travel.
Backpackers and other holidaymakers can also buy cancellation cover so that they can recoup the cost of their journey if injury forces them to cut it short.
In related news, insurance for baggage loss could also prove handy, as over 40 million bags were lost in airports around the world through 2007, according to the Air Transport Users Council.
