Maldives president Mohammed Nasheed has announced he is to introduce a new daily tax for tourists visiting the island.
Following the proposal's launch, the islands' vice president Dr Mohamed Waheed said he hoped to "leave to our children a legacy that is better than the one we inherited".
Under the new scheme, travellers will be charged $3 (£1.80) for each day of their trip, with the money being put back into various climate change projects.
Commenting on the new initiative, John Buckley, managing director of carbonfootprint.com, said if holidaymakers stayed for a couple of weeks, the charges could amount to enough to offset the environmental impact of their flights.
He added: "Travel organisations are certainly looking at ways to make their travel greener to differentiate themselves a bit ... I think the consumer demand is there."
