Backpacker travel insurance customers and other adventure-seekers are making their trips more interactive by using technology to stay in touch with friends and family, says a travel expert.
According to tour operator Gap Year for Grown Ups, gappers are breaking away from the lone adventurer image by sharing their new experience.
Lauren Mackay, brand manager at the firm, said: "It's now easier than ever for people to share holidaying experiences with their friends and family through social networking sites."
She added that the whole experience of travelling, from planning the trip to arriving home, is becoming more interactive.
"The internet and particularly social networking sites have enabled a greater ability to research destinations, read reviews, book online and take advantage of online offers when it comes to holidaying," Ms Mackay explained.
Recent research released by Halifax found that more than one in ten (11 per cent) of Britons would like to get away for six months or more.
