An expert has named modern history and ancient culture as being two of the biggest factors attracting visitors to Vietnam.
David Pattison is head of product and marketing at Voyages Jules Verne, which encompasses long haul and short haul journeys, weekends and expeditions, the conventional and the unexpected, a variety of themes and special interests.
Mr Pattsion thinks there is no shortage of fascinating places to visit in Vietnam.
He said: "The attraction of Vietnam lies not only in the well known, evocative names such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Halong Bay but also in the discovery of less well known but equally fascinating destinations like Hoi An, Hue and Haiphong."
Results from the latest annual survey by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) cited by Economist.com showed that the country moved up from sixth to fourth place in the league table of the world's fastest-growing destinations.
Last year it had 4.2 million foreign visitors, a 16 per cent increase on 2006's figures.
