New Zealand theft emphasises need for backpacker travel insurance

Thefts in a New Zealand bar have emphasised the need for travellers to ensure they have sufficient backpacker travel insurance.

Otago Daily Times reports that a couple from Queenstown were arrested by police after allegedly stealing various articles of clothing from a Wanaka bar during an opening night party. Security cameras at the Mint bar allegedly caught a woman, 26, and her male companion, 31, taking jackets and other items from the venue and taking them to their room in a hostel next door.

Constable Bruce McLean told the paper: "The staff had identified the culprits from the in-house cameras before police even arrived. They have a very, very good [security] camera set-up in there."

The new bar encompassed the X Base Wanaka complex designed to appeal to backpackers visiting the region.

The incident reiterates the need for travellers to secure backpacker travel insurance as the communal nature of hostel accommodation can mean a greater risk of theft without proper care.
