The Ottawa Citizen reports that the island, also known as Rapa Nui, has grown in popularity in recent years owning to its nomination in the New Seven Wonder of the World competition.
Made famous for its collection of mysterious stone monoliths that dot the hillsides, the island in fact faces environmental concerns as a result of the sheer number of tourists visiting each year.
Cristian Reyes, a tour operator on the island, told the paper: "We have more than 50,000 visitors during the year, which means more than 11 times the total population of the island."
The island's indigenous population is thought to have been driven away by a mysterious event in the past, prompting them to tip over the statues in anger and experts are calling for a different approach to modern tourism on the island to adopt more sustainable practices.
