Writing for travel blog Gadling, Kraig Becker, recommends visiting Patagonia's the Paine Circuit for treks offering mountain views and glacial lakes.
Mr Becker describes the circuit as "one of the best long distance hikes in the world" as it takes in the iconic Towers of Paine, a spectacular rock formation.
Roughly 65 miles long, the trail would take the average backpacker around eight to ten days to complete, according to Mr Becker.
The travel blogger warned that high winds and heavy rain can often strike in Patagonia and suggested that visitors should make sure that their equipment is in good condition.
Travel site ExChile.com advises hikers to visit the region, which covers parts of Argentina and Chile, between November and April when the weather is mildest.
