People heading to Gold Coast could buy backpacker travel insurance

Visitors planning a trip to the Gold Coast in Queensland could first buy online travel insurance to prepare for their journey.

The region is thought to have had an excellent summer, with data from STR Global revealing an increase of 16 per cent in luxury hotel bookings over the past year.

Similarly, figures from Queensland Airports suggest that there was a 15 per cent increase in the number of passengers who passed through the Gold Coast Airport.

Martin Winter, chief executive of Gold Coast Tourism, said: "When people are looking for affordable, value holidays they cannot only find them with regard to accommodation and things to do but they can get on a plane and make it happen."

The availability of cheap travel from Asia and an increased number of Australians holidaying in their own country is thought to be behind the healthy figures.

British backpackers have always been fond of Australia, with many choosing to head there from Asia. All of them have the option of buying one-way travel insurance.

The Gold Coast is renowned in Australia as a surfing destination.
