Abta - the Travel Association said tourism in the UK is showing signs of growth and a number of travel and cruise companies are offering discounts to encourage more people to defy the recession and take a trip overseas.
Cruise company Silversea recently announced that Britons booking cruises from popular destinations throughout the Mediterranean and Europe will be given free flights to their places of departure, which could interest backpackers with one-way travel insurance.
A spokeswoman for Abta said: "All the cruise lines across the board and all travel companies put in tactical promotions at various times of the year to encourage people to book."
She added that the economy will benefit regardless of whether Britons choose a holiday within the UK this year or if they choose to head overseas instead.
Worldwide travel insurance could be an advantage for backpackers, wherever in the world they choose to go.
Cruise holidays now comprise one in every 12 package trips booked by Britons, according to the Passenger Shipping Association.
