According to Marcus Watts, founder of Gapforce, those who have involved their parents in their travel plans are often those who do research into what risks they are going to be taking before buying
online travel insurance as their families will "push them into looking at the safety side".
Mr Watts added that adventure gap years are becoming increasingly popular as universities seek out candidates who have travelled.
"You need to have been overseas and if you are overseas, you might have been working in an orphanage or local school but likewise you have weekends off so you can have an adventure," he noted.
Safety standards in the popular backpacking destination New Zealand may improve further as the country's prime minister recently announced a review into the adventure travel industry.
