Three British backpackers remembered advice from a Ray Mears survival show when they got lost in the Malaysian jungle, in a story that could inspire others to buy
cheap travel insurance.
The three backpackers became lost on the Langkawi archipelago and spent a night in the wilds before remembering advice from the survival expert's BBC show and heading downstream when they found a water source.
Scrambling down a 50-foot waterfall, the trio spent over six hours swimming in the Andaman Sea before eventually being spotted by fishing boats.
Rory Maddocks, a student at Nottingham University, said: "I'll never miss an episode of Ray Mears from now. You never know when you might need it."
All three of the backpackers returned to the UK but feel they developed a closer bond as a result of their experience.
