A growth in the purchase of
cheap travel insurance could be one surprising consequence of the current recession, as more people choose to head off on gap years to get away from the economic woes.
Although it might at first seem counter-intuitive, there are in fact more people choosing to head abroad on gap years because they have been made unemployed and have nothing to hold them back.
The Daily Mail reports that some providers have already seen the sale of
worldwide travel insurance policies soar, as people made redundant during the recession are choosing to take the opportunity to head abroad.
Lauren Mackay, brand manager at gap year organiser Gap Year For Grown Ups, told the newspaper: "We have seen a 20 per cent increase in the number of older people booking a gap year."
She continued: "They are people who have been made redundant and have decided to go travelling rather than try to find a job."
Figures from the Office for National Statistics have revealed that unemployment in the UK has now topped two million, its highest level since 1997.
