Passengers can now fly directly from Sydney to Rotorua in the country's North Island with Air New Zealand.
Glen Sowry, Air New Zealand's general manager, said: "Rotorua is an iconic tourism destination and we see the potential for good passenger numbers."
He added that the new service provide add s significant opportunities for those wanting to take part in the region's skiing.
The airline will operate a twice-weekly service for up to 152 passengers with fares starting from AUS$249 (£124).
Aside from skiing and snowboarding, backpackers can find plenty of activities to enjoy all year-round in the region.
Rotorua's official tourism website says that visitors can experience Maori culture, geothermal activity, hiking and mountain-biking.
Tourism experts recommend a visit to the mud volcanoes of Hell's Gate park which includes a hot waterfall, natural boiling pools and sulphur lakes.
