Travellers planning to seek work in Australia, such as fruit-picking, are advised to buy
backpacker travel insurance.
According to a report from abc.net.au, a growing number of backpackers are heading to the Ord Valley in Western Australia to work as mango pickers. Although labour has tended to come from cities such as Melbourne and Sydney in the past, a steady stream of backpackers now provides much of the workforce. Conditions are not often ideal, with high humidity and temperatures frequently pushing 40 degrees, but workers are nonetheless easier to find than in recent years.
Tony Van Houten, a recruitment consultant, told the website: "There hasn't been an actual peak, so there hasn't been the demand for the number of people within a short time frame, so at the moment we've got more workers than positions."
Many backpackers opt to spend some time doing odd jobs such as fruit-picking as a way of earning extra spending money for their trip.
