Those hoping for one of Amazon's electronic book readers this Christmas could invest in
gap year travel insurance to keep their Kindle safe on backpacking trips.
The online retailer has announced it is cutting the price of the device as it prepares for its first UK launch.
Later this month will see an international version of Kindle going on sale in 100 countries around the world, priced at around £175.
Weighing less than a paperback book, the product can hold up to 1,500 books, claims Amazon.
Other features include a two-week battery life and the ability to show newspapers and magazines.
Explaining his ambitions for the device, Amazon's chief executive Jeff Bezos said: "I think that ultimately we will sell more books in Kindle editions than we do in physical editions."
According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, mobile operators in the UK are uncertain about whether they will be involved in the launch.
