People who plan to visit an award-winning hostel in Rotorua, New Zealand, could first buy
backpacker travel insurance.
The Treks hostel, run in the North Island town of Rotorua by YHA New Zealand, has been voted best hostel in the Oceania region of the southern hemisphere, an award which marks the third win in a row for YHA New Zealand.
Around 800,000 backpackers from around the world voted for the Hostelworld Best Hostel Awards judging on factors ranging from cleanliness through to location and security.
Mark Wells, chief executive officer of YHA New Zealand, said: "For YHA NZ to keep winning is a real testament to the quality of backpacking in this country. Several large Australian hostels even launched campaigns to try and knock us off our perch."
Mr Wells added that YHA only acquired the Treks hostel last year, which makes the win all the more impressive.
Rotorua is renowned for its Maori culture and volcanic mud pits. Travellers often gravitate towards more established backpacker centres in New Zealand such as Queenstown. All backpackers have the option of buying one-way travel insurance.
